Spotlight: Key Flight Captains Release “Heart Strings”

This alternative rock band is one that is full of brilliant lyrics, instrumentals, and vocals. Key Flight Captains is one to look out for as they increase their following and have new music just around the corner.

Key Flight Captains

Key Flight Captains (KFC), founded in 2014 by Corey and Ryno, is an alternative rock band from Houston, Texas. The band gathers inspiration from many bands such as Incubus, Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Led Zeppelin, and The Police. Key Flight also has collaborated with artists known as Saliva, Otherwise, Parabelle, Black Oak Arkansas, Rehab, Flaw, and Hold On Hollywood. The band was able to give their first radio performance on 91.1 The Boss in May 2019 when they performed an acoustic set live on air. In June 2019, Key Flight Captains competed and made it into the top 5 out of 60+ submissions in a contest. This contest was conducted by 94.5 The Buzz’s Rod Ryan and Blue October's Justin Furstenfeld titled “The Next Big Thing”. The band had their second radio appearance on 94.5 The Buzz as one of the “Hometown for the Holidays” winners. Key Flight Captains had their song played twice a day as a result of winning this contest! Fans can rest easy waiting for new music because Key Flight Captains are working on their latest single currently. Ryan is the lead guitarist and vocals of the band and Corey is the drummer.

When asked what impact they wanted to make through Key Flight Captains, Ryan, said,

"I want to uplift people and spread our message of real music being made with real instruments and with real people. Also, we just love making people move, dance, crowd surf, and just have a good time”!

Corey offered a little insight as to why he wanted to team up with Ryan and form Key Flight Captains.

"I teamed up with Ryan because the vibes are always good and the music just poured out of us easily. Never a dull moment when collaborating in the studio”.

Corey and Ryan also reflected on their favorite experiences with the band.

"We played at the oldest venue in Houston, Fitzergeralds before it was closed down. We also got to go work with Jim Wirt in Ohio. Lastly, being one of the winners for 94.5 The Buzz's "Hometown for the Holidays”.

It is clear that Corey and Ryan have a great friendship and great chemistry and you hear that in their music.

Heartstrings

Key Flight Captains' latest single is full of truthful lyrics, catchy guitar riffs, and energetic vocals. A song about a failed relationship is something that everyone listening can relate to. Describing a relationship with the phrase “pulling my heartstrings” really emphasizes the depth behind these lyrics. This toxic relationship messing around with your emotions and knowing that it was going to fail is very impactful. The truth behind these lyrics accompanied by the fast tempo, electric guitar, and drums, make a really cohesive rock song. The energetic electric guitar throughout is very catchy and gives Heart Strings that rock edge complete with a sensational guitar solo. It is clear as day why this single was played on 94.5 The Buzz after winning a contest. This song is a headbanger and has that true rock vibe. Here is a link to the music video for Heart Strings.

Overall

Key Flight Captains have a distinct rock sound that sets them apart from other alternative rock bands. The band has a lot of new music that they are working on currently. Key Flight Captains have so much talent and their new music is sure to be filled with the same energy as Heart Strings.

I would say those are some pretty good people to look up to! Liam’s first single In My Dreams, was released in 2020 and is about a relationship that he had. “Make me Cry”

This song is the perfect break-up song to cry to. It makes you feel like you are not alone and that is what everyone wants post break-up. Liam offers a vulnerable side of him in this track that is accompanied by his amazing vocals. The song starts off soft with a guitar and piano and then when the drum comes in, Liam’s vocals are truly the star. The amount of emotion you can hear in his voice is something missing in mainstream music. His vocal runs throughout the song give it even more emotion. The honest and raw lyrics convey that sense of loneliness during a break-up. This song truly creates the feelings one feels during a break-up. The catchy guitar solo shows off more of what Liam has to offer. This song is so honest and real and will connect with many. The music video embodies the song as it shows a relationship falling apart. The video has the same tone as the song and with most of it taking place at night, it invokes the sense of loneliness and heartbreak the song does. Please watch the video to support Liam Davis!

Overall

Liam has many exciting projects coming up. There is no doubt in his musical abilities and that he will certainly attract more and more listeners with no problem. “Changes”

This track starts off slow with a simple organ playing one note at a time. Yuna’s vocals come in to accompany the instrument soon after. When you get past the one minute mark, that is when the electric guitar comes in hot. The guitar provides the song with that punk rock and metal feel and amps the song up. The lyric “ Going through changes/ for better or for worse”, is just one example to give you a sense of what the song is about. Everyone can relate to these lyrics as everyone is constantly going through changes. Sometimes we don’t know why we are going through some of the things we are going through and just hope it all works out in the end. Changes gives the listeners a raw insight into life with a dark edge to it. The track also does not feature any heavy editing to the vocals or instruments which gives off a vulnerable and raw sound. This also lends a hand to hearing the real emotions of Yuna when singing this song.

Newest Music

Young Phet’s newest release Litty is a collaboration with Ronnie Rage. This track offers a sick beat accompanied by the two harmonizing during a couple of the verses, Litty has a really catchy beat that just makes you want to dance. This song really invokes just living life to the fullest, putting yourself first, not caring about anything other than yourself. Misery from his first album, has this cool piano in the background that carries on throughout. This track offers an insight to how Young Phet deals with his haters and how his old self, “Prophet” is no more and how “Young Phet is my legacy”. He is essentially telling people to get off his back and that he does not care what anyone thinks of him or his music. Young Phet’s song I CAN RAP TOO flows very easily and showcases Young Phet’s talents. This track is catchy, easy to vibe to, and the melody is super smooth, just like all of Young Phet’s music.

Overall

There is no limit to what Young Phet is capable of. At such a young age of 22, he has accomplished so much in his career and the possibilities for him. His new music is just on the horizon and we cannot wait to see what else Young Phet has up his sleeve!

Spotlight: Ronx Releases, “Retrograde”

You’ve heard of them before on our blog and on OnlyBands. But we can’t seem to get enough of them! Today’s spotlight is an artist that truly aims to spread positive messages through their music, while holding space for heavier conversations such as mental health, abusive relationships and more.

Ronx

Ronx is a Latino punk band coming from Bronx, NY. The three-piece consists of Miguel Vasquez (Guitar/Vocals), Joshua Reguillo (Bass/Vocals) and Alexy Perez (Guitar) who aim to let their fans know that they are never alone with what they are going through. Ronx is heavily influenced by Neck Deep, Blink-182, 5 Seconds of Summer and aim to use energetic instrumentation, memorable melodies and honest lyrics to craft their work. The band’s discography dates back to 2017 with I’ll Just Let Go EP and since, have released 10 singles, an EP and their debut album, Division St..Their most notable year was 2021 when they released a majority of their discography including February, Forever, Another Year & I’m Still Here, Mary Jane, Drug In Me, RETROGRADE, and Please Come Home. Therefore, it is clear that the pandemic was nothing but helpful for the band as it allowed Ronx to create and release an impressive amount of tracks. The punk turned pop-rock band has truly infected their sound with contagious energy and melodies.

“Retrograde”

The EP features three tracks which starts off with their most recent prior release and title track, Retrograde which talks about abusive behaviors and how that can truly impact relationships around you. The fast-paced, yet catchy instrumentation provides electric energy to the infectious lyrics that Joshua and Miguel sing together. The second track Tisycso follows suit with the upbeat and electric energy, yet takes a twist with the vocals that sound similar to if Neck Deep and State Champs were to write a song together. The strong harmonies in Tisycso share heavy conversations about mental health and heartbreak. Tisycso creates memorable instrumentations which adds a level of remembrance to the intense and catchy vocals. This song in particular fits directly into Ronx’s discography by taking elements from their prior releases and twisting them into an impressive christmas-turned-year-round track. Everything I’ve Ever Wanted takes a unique twist on the EP, by changing the conversation from heavier and harder conversations to a more uplifting and positive message. Thus, ending the EP on a positive and lighthearted note. This song in particular is a pop-rock lover’s anthem. The guitars are vastly different compared to the prior two tracks in Everything I’ve Ever Wanted by providing a reminiscent and candy-like instrumentation, yet build up to a nostalgic-like feel with the vocals. Ronx takes elements from various famous hits and turns it into a heartfelt song with Everything I’ve Ever Wanted

Overall

It is now clear that Ronx has expanded their discography in a heartfelt and memorable way by providing conversations to both the harder and lighter topics that we all go through at some point. Ronx has brought back the nostalgia, while providing a fresh perspective on what it means to go through mental health and unhealthy relationships. Ronx continues to gain traction and it is clear that the band is not going anywhere, as even during a pandemic, the band will continue to thrive.

Spotlight: Sidney Bird Releases “Renaissance Man”

Many of the younger generations are choosing to not have children and instead opting for pets such as dogs or cats. But if you did have a child, have you ever wondered what that experience would be like? Today’s spotlight goes to an artist that takes on that experience in a thoughtful and creative way.

Sidney Bird

When you think of Arizona, do you think of musical theater? Probably not. Nevertheless, Sidney Bird was born and raised in Arizona, who began a love for musical theater and comedy. This unusual twist, helped Sidney get to where she is today. With over 1.7 million streams from songs on her Debut album, Sidney has truly started to make a name for herself. Now in New York City, she has begun to transform her music into a western-pop sensation. You’ll notice that Sidney creates lyrics of storytelling and a deeper love for world-building. Sidney grew up listening to rock, and as she’s gotten older, began a love for more of the mainstream pop music. With this diverse range of love for music, theater and comedy, there is no telling what Sidney cannot do. She released her first single back in 2019 which received solid attention from fans. 2020 was the beginning of the pandemic which stopped many artists from doing what they love. But it didn’t stop Sidney. The singer-songwriter released an impressive 8 singles and debut album that year which fans could not get enough of. 2021 was a challenging year for many who struggled to function again after isolation. But Sidney released her debut EP last year along with 4 singles. Today, with over 40,000 monthly listeners, it is easy to say that Sidney is unstoppable.

Renaissance Man

This single is a unique twist to pop music as vocally Sidney sings more country or western, while instrumentally, the song is way more pop. Thus, fitting perfectly into Sidney’s own genre of western-pop. The song is uplifting, with hopes and desires for the future kid that Sidney dreams of. With reflections on what Sidney’s mother and father had said to her, the song provides strong suggestions of direction into Sidney’s life. You’ll notice there is a grand piano played in the music video, while the drums sound more electronic. It also sounds like there are chimes in the instrumentation, which round out the song in an outdoors feel way. The music video (which you can check out here) shows the story of Sidney raising a child with hints of nature, flowers and vocal performances. The music video provides a happy, uplifting, hopeful vibe to the idea of raising a child. Thus, perfectly fitting the track in a nature-like way.

Overall

While many feel stopped and while it is hard to resume normalcy during a pandemic, it appears that nothing can stop Sidney Bird from creating music. And it is exactly that which her 40,000 fans have come to love. That even in the hardest of times, there will be music. This single fits perfectly into Sidney’s discography while having her family highlighted in an uplifting way.

Spotlight: Loss Of Signal Releases “Audible Trauma”

Some of us like to listen to more modern music. Others like to listen to music that was before their time. But, have you ever wanted to go back to your childhood roots and listen to the music you loved when you were a kid? Today’s artist does just that. Exploring the nostalgia side of music with their latest work.

Loss Of Signal

Lately, we have been focused on American pop-punk. But what about international music? This Punk-Rock band from Belfast, Ireland goes back to the nostalgic 90’s with their music. Loss of Signal takes music back to the golden hours by creating music which reminds you of Paradise Fears, Rise Against and Sum 41 with their discography. The band is fronted by Dario (guitar/vocals), Ash plays guitar and Graham is on Drums. Loss of Signal made their debut in 2019 with their EP, Could Do Better. 2020 was a hard year for many, as the pandemic began to take over society, but that did not stop the band. They released two singles, You and Underdogs which takes a more Blink-182 meets Sum 41 twist to them. As the pandemic began to slightly lift and lives moved forward, so did Loss Of Signal. The band released Aftermath which takes a Rise Against meets Anti-Flag twist to the single.

Audible Trauma

This 12-track debut album takes on a special twist to the album that makes you remember the good days in Pop-punk/Punk-rock music. The album begins with a track that reminds you of a video game and features an automated feminine voice. The first new song on the album, Grown Ups reminds one of Blink-182 meets We The Kings and New Found Glory, yet vocally has a more modern tune to it. Loss Of Signal’s prior released songs, You, Underdogs, Break Out, Go, Home, and Aftermath are also featured on the album, with remastering. How Long is the next new song on the album and has a more punk message to the track, while instrumentally goes back to their core influences. Homewrecker follows the new tracks with a Rise Against meets Anti-Flag vibe, while vocally, has a similar sound to Blink-182. Control follows in the newer tracks released which sounds as if Simple Plan and Taking Back Sunday wrote a song together with Mark Hoppus from Blink-182. The War which is both the last new song released and last track on the album, takes on an energetic ending the album. The War provides a political punk message to the album, talking about several topics and the importance of acting and doing your part to fix the world. In short, Audible Trauma provides a strong punk message to the listener and covers a wide variety of topics. From home life and relationships, to more global and country messages, it is clear that change is needed today.

Overall

No matter where you go, it is clear that home will always help you learn your roots. Which is what Loss of Signal did. With very clear influences, but with a slightly modern twist, the pop-rock and pop-punk band has truly set the stage for a wild 2022. The 12-track album covers both new and old songs and one that will remind you of the golden days of music.

Spotlight: All Systems Go Releases, “Don’t Let Me Go”

Everyone has reached a low point in their life at some point. Whether that is financially, spiritually, emotionally, academically, or physically. But who did you reach out to during those moments? Was it a friend? A crisis text line? A family member? Sometimes we all just need some support and to know that we aren’t completely alone. That someone cares deeply about us. And today’s spotlight goes to a band that asks their fans to reach out for support if they are in a dark spot.

All Systems Go

This 4-piece pop-punk band has truly captured the sound of New Jersey. Based in Delran, NJ, the band has known each other for a very long time. Officially forming in 2016 (but had played together in high school, 2011-2013), All Systems Go has had incredible success and made numerous memories since. Their lineup consists of Matt Pezza (vocals/guitar), Devin Kollmar (vocals/guitar), Dean Mason (bass), and Joe Codispo (drums). One of their most notable years was 2019, with their release of Garden State Skies. Garden State Skies is currently signed to a deal with well-known LA producer David Snow’s publishing company, HipKat Entertainment who also mixed the record for them. The band finished 2019 strong with ASG finished a strong year with their sophomore record, an EP entitled The Waiting Room, which was released on December 6, 2019. With a current average of over 400 monthly listeners on Spotify, New Jersey has provided the band with incredible support and love. The pandemic has been hard for All Systems Go as they became forced to push their content virtually. That being said, it certainly didn’t stop them. You can check out our blog post about their prior release, “The One Where They Ride Off Into The Sunset” here and our OnlyBands podcast where we chatted to the band about, “No One Does Homecoming Like Us” which was released in October of Last year, here.

“Don’t Let Me Go”

When you’re in a dark spot, who do you reach out to? It is so important for anyone and everyone in a dark spot to remember that you are not alone. All Systems Go talks about this importance in their latest release, “Don’t Let Me Go”. Produced by Man Overboard’s Nik Bruzzese, Dean Mason (Bass) takes the song to the next level by talking about just that. In “Don’t Let Me Go” Dean reflects on a hard time in his life and how he reached out for help when he needed it. Because it is okay to ask for help and it is okay to be in hard spots. The song vocally is an uplifting reminder about how it is okay to not be okay, and that no matter what, there is always someone in our corner wanting to help us out. Instrumentally, the song takes a slower introduction that builds up quickly to an energetic twist to pop punk. The song has clear influences from Simple Plan, State Champs,. and Seaway. While the song may be darker vocally, the instrumentals add a unique uplifting sound that makes one want to dance and scream at the sky. “Don’t Let Me Go” is the true embodiment of 2022 that everyone can take with them into the year, to remember the importance of reaching out. Whether that is to a friend, a text line, a hotline, a family member, or truly anyone, the importance of remembering that no one is alone is impossible to overstate. 2021 was a harsh year for many, and featured a lot of isolation. “Don’t Let Me Go” is a strong reminder of many unsaid words that so many have felt as a result of the quarantine period. As many begin to resume normal lives, “Don’t Let Me Go” has come out at the time when we need it most.

Overall

It is now clear that All Systems Go has once again released a song with perfect timing. “Don’t Let Me Go” is the pop-punk version of stating that it is okay to not be okay and you are not alone. With clear influences from many famous pop-punk bands, this song has perfectly fit All Systems Go’s discography, while creating some unique twists to their works.

Spotlight: Sara Jackson Releases “Supercinematic”

Did you know that Mission Music Foundation is based in Los Angeles!? While we were founded in New Jersey, Mission Music Foundation has since built strong headquarters in Los Angeles. As a result, I (Blake) know of artists based on both coasts of the United States. Through all these connections, the one thing that I have not seen in my time (up until now) is an artist that has genre-bended electronic-pop and classical music. Today’s artist has done just that and as a result, changed the game of music in a way that has previously been unheard of.

Sara Jackson

This singer-songwriter has been around for a hot minute, and as a result, has built up an incredibly strong fanbase. Her first single was way back in 2010 which featured 3 songs and all in the holiday spirit. Since she has released 14 singles including several in the more recent years. Sara broke through the waters and into the music scene in 2010 where she also released her debut album. Her sophomore album was released in 2012 which featured a total of 13 tracks. You’ll notice that with every release, Sara eliminates the barriers between classical and electronic pop, almost creating an entirely new genre with her music. If you are disabled, Sara is also a more accessible artist by providing subtitles or lyrics to her music videos. By doing this, she adds another door to welcome disabled fans to her music. You’ll also notice that each video is completely different from the others and adds an extra layer of the story to each track. With over 25,000 monthly listeners on Spotify, it is so clear that Sara knows what she is doing and is able to do it well.

Supercinematic

This 10 track album is most definitely Sara’s personality. The album starts out with Vaseline which talks about wanting to change but feeling stuck, dissociation, and anxiety. This song is the perfect entrance to the album, as it brings up what Sara has been dealing with. The rest of the EP begins to talk about what to do with the pain.

In Air changes the emotion from Vaseline as the beat changes from heavy, dark, and loathing, to bubbly, upbeat, energetic, and warming. This track in particular is interesting to listen to, as it goes into the descriptive part of dissociation, and how it is used as a coping skill. This song also mentions some light lacks of emotional permanence.

Garden of Me changes the vibe to a more holiday vibe with the instrumentation, while the vocals add a Mariah Carey vibe to them. This song takes you back to Sara’s roots in her debut album that is breathless, hopeful, and relaxing. This song in particular is an anthemic ode to past selves, a reminder that time softens the sharp edges of suffering. Sweet as spring rain, it is triumphant, glittering, and resplendent-- her most optimistic answer to her gnawing obsession-- "what do we do with our pain?"

The fourth track, and the title track of the album, Supercinematic slows down the album with a meditative tone both instrumentally and vocally. While In Air and Garden of Me are more dancing Supercinematic is more of an enchanting song that has dark lyrics. The first few seconds will make you think that you are entering a rock song, though the song develops into a more emotional, yet classical pop song. The song brings up topics of addiction, pain, and emotionally draining relationships.

Odyssey picks the album back up to a fast-paced, groovy track. This song in particular talks about what the future could hold, desires, and dreams. The outro features a unique fade out which definitely fits the electronic vibe of her discography.

Water With Ice starts out slow, and slowly builds up to a darker piano vibe that may make you think that you are entering a dark, yet enchanted forest. This song in particular talks about depression, wanting to change, desires, and wanting to feel more like yourself. Wanting to escape dark emotions. This song fits into Sara’s writing well as she takes on a more descriptive take on some of the harsh emotions. Water With Ice also mentions how she doesn’t know herself before this change, from childhood, now in adulthood.

Fool of the Renaissance Faire talks about feeling fake from her past. This song mentions alcohol addiction, and drinking to escape. This song also mentions feeling isolated, alone, an outcast even in your favorite environment. If you are someone with social anxiety, depression, or ever felt that you could not be yourself in any environment, this song is for you. The instrumentation makes you think of a drama, crime, tv show that features close-ups of Sara.

River Queen is a heavier song emotionally, asking the listener to know that they are not alone in their struggles. The desires of giving the listener hope, freedom, happiness, or another general escape from their dark times. This song also brings up the fear of abandonment and almost staying, “I’d do anything for you, if only you never abandon me”. This song is perfect for anyone with abandonment issues and especially for those with Borderline Personality Disorder.

My Man changes the album’s focus from mental health, trauma, and dissociation to love and affection. This song is a very sweet love song that explains unconditional love in a slow-dance type song. Sharing about how no matter what happens, I’ll be there for you. As if nothing could keep the couple apart.

Easy To Love is the final track of the album and arguably, one of the best tracks to wrap up this album. This song has a fear of abandonment attached to it, an element of trauma, being invalidated, and wanting to feel at home. The instrumentation may make you think of an event similar to graduation, while the vocals are sung in a soft, yet powerful tone that leaves you breathless. This song would also be great for anyone that has experienced trauma, has abandonment fears, (especially those with Borderline Personality Disorder) or has ever been invalidated by those that matter most.

Overall

It is now apparent that Sara Jackson has continued to defy genres in music by creating a variety of new tracks on Supercinematic. The singer-songwriter from Los Angeles, California has gained an incredible amount of attention that is well-deserved. Will Sara be the face of Classic Electronic Pop music? I guess we will have to stick around to find out

Spotlight: Rebecca McCartney Releases Debut EP "How You Feel"

You may have heard of her from our previous blog post, but this artist has made a huge accomplishment and we thought it deserved to be celebrated! As the holidays pick up, it is the perfect time of the year to talk about the various parts of love and the tension it creates.

Rebecca McCartney

This singer-songwriter was initially raised in NYC. After doing some traveling, she has returned home to the city, and with a powerful message. With over 1,000 monthly listeners on Spotify, this talented artist has always had one thing in common with her music. The statement that you are never alone. Over 1,000 monthly listeners on Spotify are extremely significant having all of her released work been from this year. This is also an over 200 increase from the last time we spoke about her. Go, Rebecca! If there is one takeaway from her statistics, it is that hard work most certainly can pay off, if you do it well. And what do you think of when you think of New York City? For some, it’s business (like Wall St.), some its college (such as Columbia, or Fordham), and for others, it is a place of travel or holidays. The one hidden gem of NYC, though? Classical music. And Classical music is what inspired Rebecca to begin releasing music. Rebecca had previously studied Jazz and played in an R & B band, though finally decided with this love, to release her own series of works.

“How You Feel”

The 5-track EP starts out more upbeat and optimistic. In both instrumentation and vocals, the song, Remember Less, starts out with some sadder lyrics, which compliment the positive, upbeat instrumentation that the song has. This song, in particular, sticks to Rebecca’s roots with R&B and Classical music, while adding a unique twist. That being, the vocals are sung in a more Classical-Rock vocal, and the song builds up to a heavier sound with the guitars.

Just Air starts out with minimal sound, which is a twist from Rebecca’s prior work. This song in particular is great for studying music as we are heading into finals season for many college students. The harmonies in this song add an extra layer to the calming and relaxing vibes that Rebecca was clearly going for. This song in particular is a true love-struck song that many people in relationships can understand the meaning behind. Just Air is also great for slow dancing at weddings or proms.

Undone has a very familiar vibe to it, especially with the introduction to the song. Despite this, the vocals are a change to familiarity. With her soft vocals, Rebecca adds an extra layer, with the chorus being the most tragic part of the whole song, lyrically. This song, in particular, has clear roots in Rebecca’s history, while the added vocal layers create a more dynamic twist to Rebecca’s discography.

You can read our review of For Avery, In June here

Behind Closed Doors is the final track of the EP and most definitely the most underrated. The song starts out faster compared to the prior 4 tracks we covered just now. The vocals continue to be soft, though the difference in this track is that the lyrics are sung with more intensity compared to the others. The lyrics provide a unique take and wrap up the EP well. This song in particular talks about the toxicity of a prior relationship, mentioning several red flags. This song is great for survivors of abusive relationships, as the song can remind them about the reasons they left that relationship.

Overall

In short, Rebecca has definitely outdone herself with this EP, adding a combination of new and older tracks to her Debut EP. The songs provide a clear picture of an unhealthy relationship and allow for everyone to learn and grow from her past experiences with love. Slow and steady wins the race, and it is clearly working for Rebecca who is slowly growing her Spotify listeners’ count through consistent, yet diverse releases. Her various takes between mental health and love, are the topics that many of her fans need to hear about. And thus, creating a strong and supportive community. Overall, a calming, yet darkening release.

Spotlight: Joey Heins Releases “Southwark”

When Halloween happened in October, did you get into the spirit with music? There are many famous musicians who have written Halloween-themed songs out there, and today’s spotlight goes to an artist that created a single that will make you want to be in the holiday spirit year-round. While the holidays can be really hard for those that are LGBTQIAA2S+, Mentally ill, or have trauma around this time of year, today’s artist makes that struggle just a bit lighter with his most recent release.

Joey Heins

Joey Heins is an alternative and electronic musician based out of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. As a brand new artist to the Philly music scene, Joey understands the importance of making a name for himself while releasing enough songs that fans can know what to expect on a set list. He released his first single right at the beginning of the pandemic, back in March of 2020. Since, he has released 3 more singles that have various alternative instrumentation to them. You’ll notice that in each single, you can truly listen to the music more than the vocals which is part of the electronic side that Joey aims to create. This is not his first time creating music though. Joey Heins has been writing music since he was eight years old. Growing up, he played in various bands, he has learned to master the various writing styles and performance of multiple instruments. Joey also owns his pasta company “Joe’s Pasta” and releases music under his own name, as well as engineering, producing and creating tracks for a growing selection of local artists.

“Southwark”

While many songs will end fading out with instrumentation, “Southwark” is unique as the song starts with a fade-in building up to the first verse, and electronic music. The song gives off Halloween vibes with it’s electronic and haunted-like instrumentation. Lyrically written about the struggle of finding happiness through creative fulfillment, the song is tailored to young, angsty musicians who fight a daily battle between love and hate with their music. “Southwark” provides a strong electronic vibe to the song, while featuring whispering vocals that allow the listener to have a dynamic experience. While short, the song is very much energetic and fun, which leaves room for Joey to perform this song at a nightclub or bar. “Southwark” was released at the best time as well, as this song is both easy to listen to and perfectly portrays the fall/winter vibes instrumentally that every music listener is needing. This song in particular features a fair amount of autotone that adds an extra layer to both the instrumentation and vocals. You can truly hear how easy to listen to the song is as it is matched well with slow drums and well-paced vocals. Overall, creating the perfect song for the season that talks about topics every young musician feels deep to their core.

Overall

It is clear now that Joey Heins has truly created a strong entrance for himself within the Philly music scene. With “Southwark” being the perfect fall and winter song, matched with his electronic-alternative discography, Joey will begin to make a name for himself, both locally and state-wide. Joey has taken his time to learn and master several instruments which “Southwark” begins to show. Overall, creating a powerful and strong understanding of the struggles musicians face with their music.

Feature: Ethan Jewell Releases, "Loneliness in the Presence of Company"

Have you been on TikTok lately? If so, you are going to LOVE today’s feature. While many more people have been on their phones lately, musicians have begun to take advantage of this, and using social media platforms as a way to build their audience. It is a smart move, and today’s feature has not only released an incredible album, but has some big plans for the near future.

Ethan Jewell

Ethan Jewell is an indie artist that is best known from his fan base on TikTok. His introspective poetry has been seen in an entirely new light within the words and heartfelt emotions poured into every word of every single song that Ethan has created. He took to TikTok after finding solace and comfort in writing, which gained him a massive response from music lovers. From his first viral video of his original single “Snowglobe” which received over 1.7 million views, to releasing a clip of “Bouquet” which saw even greater success with over 5.6 million views, Jewell has mastered both the art of social media and music. His debut album “Live from Planet Ok” (December 2019) saw immediate success; securing over 1M streams within the first month of the release. Less than a year later, Jewell returned with his sophomore work “Living The Dream,” (August 2020) which featured even more heart wrenching lyricism and out of the box styles. You’ll notice both in his music and on his social media that breaking out of the norm in order to vocalize and normalize feelings and emotion is something Ethan excels at. In December 2020, the anticipated single “It’s Getting Bad Again” was released. Receiving over 1.2 million views on the original viral video, the track highlights the physical symptoms that are often not talked about that come with mental health struggles. An immediate fan favorite, the track is his second most streamed to date, acquiring over 2.2 million Spotify streams. In 2021, Jewell started the year off by releasing “drive thru poem,” which gained him editorial placement on Spotify’s “idk.” playlist. Ethan’s most recent single, “something to live for” debuted mid-August, and continued to receive an insane amount of support.

“Loneliness in the Presence of Company”

The 16-track album is something that both fans and musicians can love. Featuring an intro, interlude, outro, and 13 songs, the spoken word album talks about the important topics. With the conversation of mental health, while sharing some personal struggles, the album is both easy to relate to and easy to listen to. The simplistic yet heavy lyrics, matched with calming and slower-paced instrumentals makes for the perfect storm of an album. Ethan takes his time to speak every word with pure emotion and heartache that will allow for anyone listening to both cry in relatable-ness and empathy for Ethan. The lyrics and spoken word part of the album asks so many of the important questions in regards to mental health that are often not shared. This album is also great for someone studying to listen to as the instrumentals are simplistic and calming. It is no wonder that Ethan has gained such attention from social media, as this album is the perfect album for a variety of people. This album will make you feel as if you are in a storm and cannot get out of it. Each track talks about a variety of different aspects of mental health that are not talked about, but known to those struggling. The importance of each track is impossible to overstate. You’ll notice that as the album goes on, there is a slight bit of hope shared within the tracks, allowing for the listener to feel less hopeless than in the beginning half of the album. Overall, creating one of the most important albums of the year.

“I’m Interested! Where Can I See Ethan Live?”

Overall

It is now understood that Ethan Jewell has mastered both the art of social media and spoken word music. With an average of 173,200 monthly listeners, it is clear that now more than ever, music listeners are willing to talk about the important and unspoken parts of mental health. Ethan is going to be an emotional performance on his tour and “loneliness in the presence of company” truly reflects that. With millions of views on TikTok, there is a clear fan base for those needing to be heard. The album mentions how sometimes even self-care does not help, and stresses loneliness, which is something more and more people are feeling from the aftermath of quarantining for so long. Thus, creating the most important and under-rated spoken word album of 2021.

Spotlight: Z Chambers Releases “Young & Dumb”

Everyone loves a good pop artist. Even the most metal and hardcore fans can appreciate at least a single pop artist. And if you like Justin Bieber, Halsey, Charlie Puth, The Ambassadors, or even Nick Jonas (maybe even the Jonas Brothers as an artist), you are going to want to read on. The mainstream music (“pop” does stand for popular music) has placed such an emphasis on celebrity music. There are a ton of up and coming artists though, who can often sound better than some of the more well-known artists. Today’s spotlight goes to an artist who has truly brought pop to the next level.

Z Chambers

With a name like Z Chambers, it is easy to become interested in knowing who he is. Z Chambers is based in Los Angeles, California and is certainly in the right music scene to network and play music. Emerging from the woods in 2017, he released his first 3 singles that California would become obsessed with. Despite being a newer artist, he has gained a decent amount of traction in having fans from over 32 countries and an average of 64 monthly listeners on Spotify. While that may not seem like a lot compared to what you may expect from prior bands we have covered, make no mistake. For being a new artist in the music scene, this is an incredible accomplishment and there is no doubt that future releases will increase that number. The thing that many forget is that it often takes years and sometimes decades for artists to gain a significant amount of traction. Very few musicians have become big being so brand new to a music scene. He also recently released his most successful single and definitive sound titled “Now That It's Over" in April 2021 which is his 3rd most popular song on his Spotify.

“Young & Dumb”

I’m sure many of us can relate to feeling younger in our years and hoping that those wonderful moments would last forever. This song talks about just that-feeling so on top of the world, having fun, and wanting to hold on to those pure moments. The song features an older-Justin Bieber-like beat mixed with Jason Derulo if you remember some of his older work. The instrumentals will definitely take you back to the 2010’s era of pop music, while the vocals feature a more modern twist. Lyrically, the lyrics are catchy, simple and easy to understand the story. You’ll want to listen to this song when having a tough breakup, or when you want to hold on to a specific moment in time. This song is also great when coming home after an incredible concert, and need a fun song to keep you in the memories of the show. Vocally, the lyrics are sung soft, yet every note is pitch-perfect. While vocally, the notes are similar to Jason Derulo’s vocal ranges, there is a hint of autotune that adds a more electronic vibe to the song. Z Chambers articulates the lyrics smoothly and creates easy to follow lyrics that will get stuck in your head. Z Chambers has created a melodically and instrumentally incredible work of a song. The harmonies and background vocals also add a nice touch to the already masterful song that is, “Young & Dumb”. The song blends together as if it were a professional painting in a museum and overall, is easy to get stuck in your head for the next month.

Overall

In short, it would be no surprise if Z Chambers were to double his numbers on Spotify with “Young & Dumb”. This song in particular, would give anyone nostalgia to the 2010’s with a more modern take of the era. Z Chambers may be new to the Los Angeles music scene, though will clearly make an impact on many listeners who enjoyed the 2010’s pop music more than some of our latest hits. Z Chambers has clearly taken a throwback approach to his music with this latest single. And like most of his prior work, can and will get stuck in your head for a long time.

Spotlight: Years Down Release “Famous”

Now that things have somewhat returned to normal, many bands are getting back on track with releasing music, announcing tours or shows, and in general, putting more focus into their music again. While the world is going through a lot of change, there are some artists in the industry who want to go big. Today’s spotlight goes to a band that makes you wonder what the true meaning behind becoming famous is. And have you ever wondered what that would look like?

Years Down

Have you ever heard of a garage band? Years Down should be the photograph of that definition in the dictionary. They have truly understood what it means to be one. Based out of the winter-like city, Denver, Colorado, the 5-piece punk-rock band has truly exploded within the Colorado music scene.  With wild and titanic influences of bands like Green Day, The Offspring, Blink 182, and a whole range of diverse musical genres, the group features (drums) Ben Gonzalez, Dylan Beresford (Guitar) and John Nicholas (guitar), Griffin Mather (vocals), and Sterling Swanson (bass). Years Down began their first-ever performances in 2019 and have taken the pandemic harshness with an easy breeze by building and honing in on their sound to create their most accomplished works of art. Their first single, “Better Off” was released at the beginning of this year (February), followed by “Cover Girl” in June (2021) and “Best of Worst Times” (2021) which has sparked some incredible attention from the scene. It is no surprise that for a brand-new band, they have over 352 monthly listeners already on their Spotify with “Better Off” reaching over 6 thousand listens. They are without a doubt, in your face, energetic, honest, and the true understanding of punk-rock music. You will find that with each released song, there is the commonality of it being powerful, addictive, and perfect for a mosh pit. There is no doubt that Years Down will continue to soar and grow, despite being such a brand new face to the music scene.

“Famous”

If there were three words to describe this song, it would be catchy, powerful, and energetic. The song starts off with a guitar riff that will get in your head so long, you’ll feel crazy. The drums add a solid and steady beat that will make you want to move and groove to the beat. The bass is the perfect balance between guitars and drums that bass should always provide. The first set of lyrics remind you of someone having a panic attack with the feeling of “I’m going to die! I can’t breathe!” thoughts that one might associate with it.  The guitars are consistent and might even remind you of a song similar to the 2006 version of the Jonas Brothers. The lyrics ask several important questions that both a musician and someone going through a hard time would ask. It almost might remind you of someone going through a breaking point, checking their facts, and wondering how much more they are willing to endure to reach their goal. And is it even worth it? The song, “Famous” makes you wonder how much someone is willing to go through to become famous and wonder if they even feel worth it, once they achieve that goal. The build-up to the chorus makes you want to dance, yet re-evaluate some of your life choices both musically and lyrically. The chorus answers some of the questions asked in the verses and makes you feel sad for people in most industries trying to make something of themselves. The song is clear, powerful, energetic, thought-provoking, and overall, incredibly detailed and thought out. While lyrically, you might listen to this song to help you sort out some racing thoughts, musically, “Famous” is quite the opposite. Making you want to dance, move, have the instruments stuck in your head for hours upon hours, and in general, is fun. The vocals are in your face, powerful, and hit just the right notes. The lyrics are sung in both a melodic, yet speaker-like tone that you can truly understand each and every lyric that was written. Thus, the song overall is quite the nice balance and has a perfect contrast to each other, making “Famous” an incredibly underrated song of the year.

Overall

It is no surprise that Years Down is making moves in Denver, Colorado, and it would be no shock to anyone if Years Down did become famous. The band has once again proven their sound and truly mastered their craft at a young age, which is incredibly hard for most to do. “Famous” is the perfect and unique balance between thought-provoking and in-your-face fun. While sticking to their sound, the garage band has learned to adapt and has created yet another masterful song that is candy to your ears. Years Down the line (pun intended), it would now be clear that Years Down will have made history in the music scene by taking the pandemic in a new direction that will inspire future generations of musicians to do the same.

Spotlight: Brian Bulger Releases “Dissolve”

While many have taken this year to get back to normal, many have forgotten about what this pandemic has taught us. While definitely traumatic, one could argue that it has reminded us how important our home life, basic self-care and socialization needs are, both individually and collectively. Today’s spotlight goes to an artist that has truly understood that this pandemic had some grey area in our lives.

Brian Bulger

This singer-songwriter is based out of Springfield, Missouri which is actually more known for its “small city charm” than its music scene. Thus, Brian has truly broken barriers and has become well-known everywhere since. With over 36,400 monthly listeners on Spotify, it is now obvious that Brian has been making big waves both in the music scene and in his home area. His first single came out in 2016 and since, Brian has previously released 13 singles, a single EP that featured 6 songs, and a debut album. 2019 was Brian’s most notable year with releasing 4 singles and his debut album. 2020 (during the pandemic) was also a strong year for Brian when he released 4 singles. More recently in 2021, Brian has also previously released 5 singles. It is clear now that Brian will continue to write and release numerous amounts of music that leave his fans begging for more. Brian writes about the important topics, with instrumentation that features an almost acoustic country, meets pop and indie vibe. One might also notice how his music is calming, yet powerful and leaves his listeners both relaxed and empowered.

“Dissolve”

This 11-track album is Brian’s latest work and was released on November 11, 2021. The album is a harder listen to compared to his prior work as it explores Brian's personal journey of healing from trauma and leaving evangelical christianity. Through stories of purity culture, an abusive father, depression, anxiety, and disassociation, this EP brings up an important conversation that is not talked about enough. The first song is definitely a pandemic baby (You Were Born In A Pandemic) which also has the lyric that makes up the title of this album. As the lyrics encourage the listener to come back stronger and get back to where they started, the instrumentation is an acoustic guitar that has some sad lyrics. The harmonies in the middle to last half of the song, provide a mantra-like vibe that makes you want to sing along.

The second song provides a more happy-like, yet relaxed vibe with the instrumentation. This is while the lyrics as the important questions and remind the fan of their self-worth. Quick Step Manic (and the third track), has a faster beat from the first two, and even features a drum beat. This song talks about heartbreak and almost feeling hopeless. Quick Step Manic also brings up some traumatic experiences of Brian’s and lyrically could be a harder song to listen to.

Dead Battery Signal is less of a song, and more of an interlude that has some more spoken parts to the album. The vibe of this particular song might remind you of an old TV speech. The Song You Like has a more catchy beat than the prior songs mentioned, and features Guinevere Sheafer on vocals as well. This particular track makes you both want to cry and tell Brian that things will be alright. Bad In A Good Way has a more pop-like beat, and back to the motivational lyrics that more of his work has. The song is catchy and might be the most fast-paced song on the album, which is the perfect combination between moderately paced and a dancing song.

God, My reverts back to the slower paced music that more of the EP has, and is very heartbreaking in the lyrics, providing a more in-depth look at Brian’s past that one may not initially realize. Many questions are asked in this song, and is one of the more notable songs on the album, talking about religious trauma. This song in particular talks about all the different ways that Brian would like to view “God”, yet how the Christianity higher power has traumatically altered that view.

BaseBall Bat (A Story) is exactly the embodiment of this song. A story that also involves a baseball bat and a big brother that makes the listener think that the lyrics are directed at them. Brian shares some sensory elements to this story that allow you to truly picture the setting he talks through. Temple has the instrumentation that you might expect at a Christian church, while the lyrics talk about dissociation, trauma, heartbreak, and overall, is one of the heavier songs. The instrumentation builds up through the song slowly, while maintaining that calm personality Brian has with his music.

Tess slows the ending of the album down fast, with a slowly strummed electric guitar and has a slight bit of hope in the lyrics. This song is a break from the typical style that Brian writes, which may remind you of a slowed down pop-rock song. This song is a harder listen for those that may cry to music easily as the lyrics are truly heartbreaking and easy to make you think about your life.

The final song on the album, Everyone Is The Reason starts off with parts of the first song, You Were Born In A Pandemic, features a speaking part that has some truly heartbreaking lyrics, talking about the escape from religious trauma, and the same speaker from Dead Battery Signal. The speaking section also brings up how cults function. That everyone truly wants to be there, and how trapping that can feel to someone trying to escape. Thus, creating an album that is both immensely heartbreaking, sad, yet calming, hopeful, and easy to listen to in its entirety.

Overall

Brian truly has achieved his goal with this song and while mostly sticking to his refined sound, has slowly begun to experiment with it. This heartbreaking, yet hopeful album has brought up the important conversation of religious trauma that society fails to mention. Religious trauma is actually a very common situation for many ranging from the LGBTQIAA2S + umbrella, to minorities and child cult victims. The issue is that religion is so normalized in our society, that we shut down anyone who says that religion can be a very violent and abusive situation. Brian has created a masterful album that will give you both feelings of hope and hopelessness, allowing everyone to truly empathize and grow with him.

Spotlight: All Systems Go Releases "The One Where They Ride Off Into The Sunset"

Have you ever heard of a happy ever after becoming reality? It’s not common. While fairytales sometimes exist, it is not a daily occurrence. Today’s spotlight goes to an artist that we have previously featured on OnlyBands, and a band that genuinely has been considered underground for way too long. This artist has once again captured the definition of pop punk while staying true to their sound and roots.

All Systems Go

The 4-piece pop-punk band has truly captured the sound of New Jersey. Based in Delran, NJ, this band has known each other for a very long time. Their double vocals, fiery riffs and solos, jumpy bass lines, lead-style drumming, and killer live performances, make their shows and music one wants to remember. One might consider their music as if pop-punk and rock and roll had a child. One of their most notable years was 2019, with their release of Garden State Skies. Garden State Skies is signed to a deal with well-known LA producer David Snow’s publishing company, HipKat Entertainment who also mixed the record for them. The band finished 2019 strong with ASG finished a strong year with their sophomore record, an EP entitled The Waiting Room, which was released on December 6, 2019. With a current average of over 500 monthly listeners on Spotify, New Jersey has provided the band with incredible support and love. The pandemic has been hard for All Systems Go as they became forced to push their content virtually. Thankfully shows are returning and the band has big plans. Complemented by the return of live shows this year, the band is currently working with producer Nik Bruzzese (of Man Overboard) on new music to be released in the fall and winter, with bigger music and show plans for 2022.

“The One Where They Ride Off Into The Sunset”

The title of this track truly embodies the vibe of this song. While pop-punk, the song features an almost fairytale-like vibe to it, that one could see at a wholesome end of a Disney Princess movie. The intro to the song is several heavy guitar riffs that make you want to groove and dance. The main vocals provide an authentic beat that compliments the instrumentation perfectly. There are several harmonic vocals that Devan and Matt do which create a pitch-perfect melody, which is truly ear candy to the listener. The drums, bass, and guitars are steady, upbeat, fun, and may remind you of if Jimmy Eat World and Taking Back Sunday had a child. This is in contrast to the vocals which would remind you of if Blink-182 mixed with Simple Plan. Thus, various styles of music create the most unique and romantic pop-punk song of the year. The song’s ending is simplistic, though catchy in fading with the lyrics being repeated over with harmonies and double lyrics. This style might remind you of Mayday Parade, though be warned that, unlike Mayday’s general writing, this song will get stuck in your head for days on end and have a more hopeful, and upbeat message. All Systems Go has once again, created a hopeful, upbeat, positive, musically-sound single that would be a shame if it did not go viral along with a video of two lovers heading into the sunset. The song’s title is both simple, and a perfect definition of the vibe and message. And if you are wondering about the message, the lyrics detail frontman Devin Kollmar’s relationship with his now-fiancee, from the night they met at a party to their engagement six years later and the simple things that make their relationship stronger. Thus an incredibly healthy relationship song is a nice contrast to the typical “I’m leaving an abusive relationship” message that pop-punk tends to bring. The vocals match the lyrics with their heartfelt vibes that will leave you wanting a relationship just as healthy as this one. The guitars are incredibly catchy as well, with the drums being wonderfully in time, and thus creating the music that will leave you wanting to hear more, even after the song ends. Overall creating the most dynamic and healthy song that pop-punk has had in a long time.

Overall

All Systems Go has truly outdone themselves once again with “The One Where They Ride Off Into The Sunset” by creating catchy lyrics, upbeat and fun instrumentation, and overall making you want a happy ever after. It would be a real shame if Disney did not place this song into one of their future movies as the title says all you need to know about the message of this song. All Systems Go has achieved one of the hardest things to do in pop-punk music - healthy and fun music that a pop-punk listener can enjoy - and truly did it effortlessly. With currently over 500 monthly listeners on Spotify, this song deserves to double that number. All Systems Go is a powerful, positive message that the world needs more of with this song while sticking to their sound where it matters.

Spotlight: Rebecca McCartney Releases, “For Avery, In June”

Many people these days have been going back to their roots to find inspiration. What is your inspiration? For some, it’s a musician that speaks to them in a way that feels unheard of for anyone else. For others, it could be a painter, a writer, a photographer. Ultimately, what matters is that you find reasons to keep pushing through in your craft. As old as the world is, one thing is certain. The love for classical music has never changed. Today’s spotlight goes to an artist who is going back to her roots and has released today, an incredibly well-done song.

Rebecca McCartney

This singer-songwriter was initially raised in NYC. After doing some traveling, she has returned home to the city, and with a powerful message. With over 840 monthly listeners on Spotify, this talented artist has always had one thing in common with her music. The statement that you are never alone. Over 840 monthly listeners on Spotify is extremely significant having all of her released work been from this year.

“For Avery, In June”

The song is a slow ballad that is a nice change compared to what we usually cover. This particular song is as if R&B met Jazz. The lyrics tell the story of her friend (assuming the name is Avery) who has been through one too many hard breakups. It starts out slow, and through the entire song, builds up to a more energetic, powerful, and calming ending. In an unexpected instrumental part of the song, you can hear an electric guitar for a short bit being plucked on the strings. Avery stated how this song is, “a good song to listen to with small tears and then call your friend you haven’t talked to in a year" which perfectly fits the vibe of this particular song. “For Avery, In June” might remind you to call a friend, and while the song may be sad, it is also hopeful as the lyrics show a sign of hope and resilience. One that is much needed in today’s society. Rebecca wrote a unique, powerful, yet calming song that is something many more people in this world need to hear. While there is always going to be some level of darkness, there will also always be some level of light, which “For Avery, In June” is a strong example of. Rebecca has once again proven herself with a strong message of not being alone, as writing a song dedicated to a friend, is a strong symbol of support and love. It is also just the evidence that many people forget in their darkest moments. Even when you feel completely alone and isolated, you will always find someone (a musician, a photographer, a writer, an artist, Mission Music, etc) in your corner rooting for you. And this song truly embodies the definition of friendship, heartbreak, and healing. Overall, creating a song that can give you that motivation to get through just the next day, after a breakup.

Overall

Overall the song, “For Avery, In June” is a symbolic song for numerous reasons and truly embodies the definition of support. Rebecca has once again, created an important message within the music industry and to her listeners, reminding everyone she meets both in music and beyond, that no one is alone. With classical roots, this R&B song has created a new version of the indie-rock singer-songwriter that has both powerful and heartbreaking lyrics, with a sense of hope. It is no doubt that Rebecca is going to land safely in the NYC music scene as this song will continue to take her far.

Spotlight: The Phoenix Within Releases “Overdue”

You have seen them on OnlyBands, and now you are hearing them on our blog. It is especially important to check them out. Today’s spotlight goes to one of the kindest bands we have met, and a band that is clearly in the up-and-coming range. This is a group of friends (and brothers) who not only have big plans in the industry, but are doing it the right way.

The Phoenix Within

This rock band is based out of Queens, New York, which officially makes them one of the biggest bands in their local music scene. Formed in 2013 by Omar Feliciano (singer-songwriter), Nick Narlis (bass), John Narlis (guitar), and James Narlis (drums), they truly have become a real family both inside and outside of their music. Their extensive discography proves their dedication to their fans and project, by showcasing a variety of different musical elements and lyrical topics. You’ll notice that the band never does the same thing twice in their music, as they are constantly learning and growing within their craft. Lyrically, they talk about a vast series of situations, ranging from autobiographical origins and self-evaluation, to advising younger artists to embrace their own originality and authenticity in their own work, and even topics of love and general emotions from the heart. With an average of 1,000 monthly listeners on Spotify, the band has become well-known by playing shows, constantly releasing music, and being genuinely good people. You can get to know Omar on a more personal note by checking our OnlyBands podcast.

“Overdue”

While it is always Overdue for new music, this album is the most. Not in a bad way, but in the most exciting and powerful pieces that The Phoenix Within has released.

The album starts with Copycat that takes a mix between The Killers and Queen type of vibe in the song. A more acoustic vibe in the beginning of the song which was a bold first move for the band in the changing of introductions to albums. This song in particular not only lives up to the title in the message, but motivates the listener to be original and themselves. Both inside and outside of music.

South Ozone Park takes the album on a fast twist with heavier guitars, and more motivational lyrics. The instrumentals might remind you of Jimmy Eat World mixing with Avril Lavigne. There is a few second break before the music picks up hard in South Ozone Park which is a The Phoenix Within signature. Daddy Issues takes on a faster, slightly acoustic mindset that I could easily see being played on at a hotel on a beach, The chorus takes on the heaviest part of the song with heavier guitars and more powerful vocals. The song’s message is most definitely about “Daddy issues”.

Hypothetical starts similar to the earlier songs with lighter guitars in the beginning and building up to the chorus. This song is different from the prior as it features a rhythmic guitar instrumental on top of the lead guitar in between the chorus and second verse. Despite the similarities in structure, the song is quite different and would give you Foo Fighters meets Weezer vibes.Tenfold takes you on a faster ride compared to the slower few songs just before it. This song in particular has a fast start, that will let you know how important it is to be the bigger and more kind person while maintaining your boundaries in tough situations. This song is best for leaving a toxic breakup, whether that is from work, friendship or or long-term relationship.

No Big Deal is an interesting song that The Phoenix Within decided to place on the album, as it has quite a different take from the rest of the album- both instrumentally and lyrically. This song might take you back to The Killers meet Taking Back Sunday, while lyrically, the song is darker and leaning more to the emo-rock side. This is an important song of the album. While most of the album talks about leaving relationships, the importance of knowing yourself, your work, and your boundaries, this song talks about leaving grudges at the door and the importance of moving forward. The importance of learning how to let different things go, is such a hard skill and this song is a great motivator in learning how to do that.

Volunteer may well be one of the slowest songs on the album and one of the most positive love songs that is on Overdue. With a wedding-like vibe, the song is a sweet and romantic take on how to love someone. Omar states commitments to his future lover in this song. Awareness is more of a mental-health take of the album. This song would be best used in reminding others or yourself about the simple fact that you are not alone. That there is always someone out there who not only cares, but can also relate and provide support. If you’ve ever felt alone, not enough, depressed, or suicidal, this is the song for you.

Certain talks about the importance of being in the present moment and remembering of what is and is not in our control. Another mental health song, yet different in both the instrumental and vocals of how the song is played. This song will make you want to spend every moment with those that you love and care for. Certain reminds us all that not everything is our fault and we can only take the blame for what we have control over.

Lacking, Remake, and Pessimist are the last three tracks of the album and also previously released. The trio and final three provide a motivational and powerful ending to the album as it takes on a heavier, and original vibe. Overdue ends with The Phoenix Within being authentic and true to both themselves and their fans by adding more opportunities for fans to become obsessed with their prior work.

Overall

It is now clear that The Phoenix Within has once again stayed true to themselves and their fans, while exploring a variety of new ways to create rock music. The Queens rock project is building up not only a fan base, but a self-aware, and self-confident fan base while applying their music to themselves, They have once again created an album that sparks both insight, and creativity within their music. Their discography shows that they are not standing still and will continue to release music for as long as they live.
