Spotlight: Rebecca McCartney Releases, “For Avery, In June”

Many people these days have been going back to their roots to find inspiration. What is your inspiration? For some, it’s a musician that speaks to them in a way that feels unheard of for anyone else. For others, it could be a painter, a writer, a photographer. Ultimately, what matters is that you find reasons to keep pushing through in your craft. As old as the world is, one thing is certain. The love for classical music has never changed. Today’s spotlight goes to an artist who is going back to her roots and has released today, an incredibly well-done song.

Rebecca McCartney

This singer-songwriter was initially raised in NYC. After doing some traveling, she has returned home to the city, and with a powerful message. With over 840 monthly listeners on Spotify, this talented artist has always had one thing in common with her music. The statement that you are never alone. Over 840 monthly listeners on Spotify is extremely significant having all of her released work been from this year. If there is one takeaway from her statistics, it is that hard work most certainly can pay off, if you do it well. And what do you think of when you think of New York City? For some, it’s business (like Wall St.), some its college (such as Columbia, or Fordham), and for others, it is a place of travel or holidays. The one hidden gem of NYC, though? Classical music. And Classical music is what inspired Rebecca to begin releasing music. Rebecca had previously studied Jazz and played in an R & B band, though finally decided with this love, to release her own series of works.

“For Avery, In June”

The song is a slow ballad that is a nice change compared to what we usually cover. This particular song is as if R&B met Jazz. The lyrics tell the story of her friend (assuming the name is Avery) who has been through one too many hard breakups. It starts out slow, and through the entire song, builds up to a more energetic, powerful, and calming ending. In an unexpected instrumental part of the song, you can hear an electric guitar for a short bit being plucked on the strings. Avery stated how this song is, “a good song to listen to with small tears and then call your friend you haven’t talked to in a year" which perfectly fits the vibe of this particular song. “For Avery, In June” might remind you to call a friend, and while the song may be sad, it is also hopeful as the lyrics show a sign of hope and resilience. One that is much needed in today’s society. Rebecca wrote a unique, powerful, yet calming song that is something many more people in this world need to hear. While there is always going to be some level of darkness, there will also always be some level of light, which “For Avery, In June” is a strong example of. Rebecca has once again proven herself with a strong message of not being alone, as writing a song dedicated to a friend, is a strong symbol of support and love. It is also just the evidence that many people forget in their darkest moments. Even when you feel completely alone and isolated, you will always find someone (a musician, a photographer, a writer, an artist, Mission Music, etc) in your corner rooting for you. And this song truly embodies the definition of friendship, heartbreak, and healing. Overall, creating a song that can give you that motivation to get through just the next day, after a breakup.

Overall

Overall the song, “For Avery, In June” is a symbolic song for numerous reasons and truly embodies the definition of support. Rebecca has once again, created an important message within the music industry and to her listeners, reminding everyone she meets both in music and beyond, that no one is alone. With classical roots, this R&B song has created a new version of the indie-rock singer-songwriter that has both powerful and heartbreaking lyrics, with a sense of hope. It is no doubt that Rebecca is going to land safely in the NYC music scene as this song will continue to take her far.
